Today’s massive data explosion has been triggered by bandwidth-intensive multimedia content and connected devices, as well as businesses adopting the latest networking technologies and applications. According to Cisco’s® Visual Networking Index (VNI) and VNI Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update, global IP traffic has increased more than fourfold in the past five years, and will increase threefold over the next five years. Cisco also forecasts annual global IP traffic will surpass the zettabyte threshold by the end of 2017, while global mobile data traffic will increase nearly elevenfold between 2013 and 2018. While the explosion signifies proliferation of technology and the Internet of Things (IoT), it also brings up a bigger question: can carriers’ ability to deliver bandwidth keep up with growing end-user consumption?
