Bulk Fiber Networks, the Nordic’s leading provider of ultra-scalable, highly connected, sustainable digital infrastructure and fiber networks along with Aqua Comms, a leading provider of network connectivity services and Meta, announce the completion of the Havhingsten cable system. The parties contracted with Alcatel Submarine Networks (“ASN”) to build the subsea cable, offering direct interconnection to major European and Nordic cities. This truly diverse route will avoid congestion within the English Channel while providing enterprises, carriers and hyperscalers with the shortest route linking the UK and Ireland to the Nordic region.
The Havhingsten cable system is the world’s first aluminum conductor powered subsea cable system allowing for a higher number of fiber pairs per cable due to the low cable conductor voltage drop. The removal of traditional copper raw material and replacement with aluminum from the manufacturing process benefits the overall system in both efficiency and cost reduction.
In addition, the new cable system combines data transmission seamlessly across both an unrepeatered subsea segment in the Irish Sea, a terrestrial segment in the UK and a repeatered segment in the North Sea. Installing the Havhingsten cable system also showcased an enhanced, jet-assisted burial plough in both the North and Irish Sea segments, allowing the installers of the systems to bury the cable to a specific level of protection in challenging seabed conditions along the route.
