According to a survey by IDC, 60 to70 percent of all IT enterprises can be expected to make major investments in cloud-based solutions by 2020. Rapid growth in all kinds of cloud services will make cloud computing the fastest-growing of all technology platforms. At the same time, the number of cloud-enabled devices making up the Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to grow to 31 billion globally by 2020, and by 2025 will surpass 75.4 billion devices. This incredible proliferation of devices will drive growth in the global IoT market from $2.99 trillion in 2014 to $8.9 trillion in 2020.
As a result of the explosive adoption of cloud computing, digital traffic to and from data centers is increasing rapidly, which is creating a need to distribute cloud infrastructure to more locations at the edge of the network. EdgeConneX’s Edge Data Center® (EDC) model is designed to provide an effective solution for this growing challenge, as well as the challenges associated with future IoT applications at the edge of the network, and has flourished in the U.S. market as well as Europe and South America.
EdgeConneX® EDCs are purpose-built and precisely located to provide secure Tier II and III facilities that house content with the lowest possible latency to local-market consumers. EDCs enable faster and more affordable content delivery by allowing large cloud providers, newer edge providers and legacy content providers to offload much of their bandwidth-intensive content, services and applications to local market ISPs. This gives providers the ability to cache content in local data centers until it’s ready to be viewed, enabling fast, simple and reliable delivery to end users, while maintaining high quality service and experience.
