Data Center POST (DCP) Question: International Telecoms Week is one of the industry’s largest and most important events for the year. What type of company do you work for and what are you looking forward to accomplishing at ITW 2023?

Anthony Kewitsch, Co-Founder and CEO, Telescent (AK) Answer: Telescent specializes in automated fiber interconnection solutions that speed up cloud and telco service delivery while enhancing the efficiency and performance of data center networks. Its range of products includes programmable fiber optic patch panels that feature a unique robotic arm for seamless, hands-free management of the physical network infrastructure.

(DCP) Q: The first ITW Keynote panel features some of the industry’s largest players sharing their perspectives of the industry. What is the top trend that you and your company has its sights on, and why?

(AK) A: ChatGPT is a ”black swan” event driving interest in generative AI and the data center architectures required to support the unprecedented scale of the machine learning clusters powering AI. There is a strong secular growth forecasted for over ten years in this field, and cloud data center operators are seeking competitive advantages as they evolve to support ever-increasing data sets and GPU cluster sizes. Google has been publicly evangelizing the value proposition of fiber circuit switching to improve the performance of data centers, and this has catalyzed strong interest in fiber switching solutions such as those provided by Telescent. Telescent provides “picks and shovels” for this ML/AI revolution.

(DCP) Q: As the global wholesale infrastructure industry continues to evolve, what are you experiencing from enterprise users about how they need to be supported (or technologies they need developed?)

(AK) A: The bandwidth demands in data centers are seeing a step function increase with the emergence of new machine learning workflows at massive scale. We are seeing growing interest in multi-fiber MPO/MT connectors & low loss interconnect solutions for parallel fiber solutions to achieve 800 Gbps, 1.6 Gbps and beyond. Parallel fiber interconnects are growing in importance, and the Telescent robotic solution is connector and fiber agnostic.

(DCP) Q: What makes digital infrastructure smart and sustainable and what is your business doing to help bring the industry forward in this fashion?

(AK) A: Automation of the fiber infrastructure has been shown by Google to improve the electrical efficiency of data center networks by over 40%. Fiber-switching solutions like those offered by Telescent are being integrated into future large-scale networks to meet the sustainability targets of new builds. These efforts to support massive campuses to drive digital infrastructure innovation are great examples of how we are helping to bring the industry forward with smart and sustainable solutions.
