The company and its collaborators will illustrate use of cutting-edge sea water cooling technology to achieve leading sustainability capabilities in data center operations
Lisbon, Portugal – October 14, 2024 – Start Campus, a company focused on designing, building and operating a new generation of sustainable data centers, announces today that it will present a case study along with collaborators from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory and Alfa Laval at JetCool’s Pavilion as part of the 2024 Open Compute Project (OCP) Global Summit, taking place October 15-17, 2024, in San Jose, CA. This Summit will bring together leaders from across the open IT Ecosystem development industry to connect on manifesting innovative ideas into practical realities to foster progress in the data center industry.
Set for October 16, 2024, Start Campus will present findings of a research paper featuring the company’s SINES DC project as a case study. This Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (“IEEE”) research paper is titled, Advancing Sustainability in Data Centers: Evaluation of Hybrid Air/Liquid Cooling Schemes for IT payload using Sea Water.
The paper focuses on advancing sustainability in data centers through innovative cooling systems that leverage ocean water for both air and liquid cooling. As cloud computing, AI and HPC continue to grow, data centers face rising energy demands and power constraints, particularly for high-performance GPUs. With cooling consuming up to 40% of a data center’s energy, innovative solutions are essential. While air cooling is the standard in the industry, underutilized free-cooling sources like sea water, river water and aquifers offer significant operational efficiencies. This study, based on Start Campus’ SINES DC facility, evaluates the performance of air-only and hybrid air/water cooling systems using seawater. The results show that these cooling methods improve energy efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions and support sustainability goals without depleting or damaging natural resources.
SINES DC was selected for inclusion in the paper as a case study thanks to Start Campus’ ability to deploy high-density hybrid air and liquid cooling deployments at the site while harnessing the cooling power of the ocean, reducing the overall energy footprint and setting a standard for future data centers. As a result, SINES DC, now the largest data center development underway in Europe, will deliver a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.1 while using 100% renewable energy and a WUE of 0.0.
Start Campus will present the findings from this paper in detail during a joint presentation session with Brookhaven Lab, Alfa Laval and JetCool at the OCP Global Summit Expo Hall Stage. Highlights of the scheduled presentation include the carbon and flow savings made possible by Start Campus’ unique design, leveraging ocean cooling water among other technologies to enable innovative liquid cooling deployments at its SINES DC.
