Telecom Newsroom recently sat down with Ramamoorthy to discuss enterprise challenges, solutions, and more.

Telecom Newsroom, Question (TNR-Q): Can you tell us a bit more about your company?

Nishevitha Ramamoorthy, AppViewX, Answer (NR-A): Our company’s name is AppViewX. We are a cybersecurity and network automation company catering primarily to enterprises.

TNR-Q: What is the one thing that differentiates AppViewX within the industry?

NR-A: Most other solutions offer automation for only one part of the network  — either L2-L3 or L4-L7. The AppViewX platform can be used to automate across layers. We also orchestrate across on-premises, multi-cloud, hybrid, and containerized environments and are vendor-agnostic.

TNR-Q: What do you see as the biggest challenge facing enterprise networks today?

NR-A: Most enterprise networks aren’t cloud-native. While a part of it is in the cloud, there’s always an on-premises component. Managing such heterogeneous deployments, and sometimes migrating applications from one to another is an onerous task that requires the coordination of multiple tools and teams. Without a solution to oversee and orchestrate operations, such networks can quickly become unmanageable.

TNR-Q: In light of the COVID-19 global pandemic, what advice do you want to give to enterprise networks for consideration today or in the future?

NR-A: Automate your network as extensively as possible. Make it human-independent and ensure even non-network staff, such as application owners or security engineers, can execute network tasks in case of an urgent requirement or emergency. This way, you can make sure your network is up for any contingency, be it application traffic surges or having to support remote workers, without much manual intervention.

TNR-Q: What is AppViewX’s position on hybrid multi-cloud deployments for the enterprise?

NR-A: Hybrid multi-cloud deployments are the way to go, but only if managed right. At the end of the day, the goal of hybrid multi-goal deployments is to ensure high availability, and improper management can go against that very goal. How? Multi-cloud deployments are, by default, complex. Lack of visibility, standardization, and compliance, coupled with manual processes, create management gaps and make them prone to errors. All of this ultimately lead to downtimes.

TNR-Q: How do you define digital transformation, and what is AppViewX doing to help enterprise businesses adapt more effectively?

NR-A: We see digital transformation as more of a customer experience rather than a business goal. It’s a state where customers can easily use a product or service without any direct help from the company that offers the product or service. This calls for more and better applications that are intuitive enough to serve customers themselves, while providing businesses with enough data with which they can further improve their applications. To build more and better applications, the underlying network infrastructure has to be stable and agile enough. This is what AppViewX does  — improve network infrastructure stability and agility through closed-loop, context-aware management, automation and orchestration.

TNR-Q: What is one of the biggest challenges of enterprise digital transformation and how should it be addressed?

NR-A: The biggest challenge, as we see it, is the difficulty or reluctance of enterprises to move to the cloud. We all know that the cloud is the biggest enabler of digital transformation. Yet, for reasons such as security, lack of skill set, or just the sheer tedium of migrating applications to the cloud, many enterprises shy away from it. Cloud migration is a gradual process  — it should not be hurried. Having a clear strategy with defined goals, a phased approach, and the appropriate tools can ensure a smooth and effective transition.

TNR-Q: What is the one thing that enterprise companies need to be aware of as they embrace hybrid multi-cloud computing?

NR-A: Be absolutely sure that you need it, and once you are, make sure you have the right tools and the right people to make it work. A few enterprises abandon multi-cloud only a few months after adopting it, because they realize that it doesn’t suit their purpose or is difficult to manage. Preparation is key.

TNR-Q: Based on your experience and industry knowledge, what are you seeing enterprise businesses doing with technology that is a ‘waste of time’?

NR-A: Using a tool that they use in DevOps for network automation and expecting extraordinary results. It doesn’t work that way. Pushing a tool to do beyond what it’s capable of doing will only impede growth. It may work for the short term, but in the long run, when it’s time to scale up your network or adopt new technologies, you’ll find those tools wanting.

TNR-Q: What is the most important driver of change taking shape today?

NR-A: The COVID-19 pandemic, for one. It has definitely led businesses to rethink their whole business and IT strategy. Increased adoption of DevOps in other business domains would be another.

TNR-Q: What products or services are you most excited to share with the enterprise community at the ONUG Digital Live Fall event?

NR-A: The AppViewX Service Catalog. It is an incredibly intuitive module that abstracts away all infrastructure complexity and lets any team or business user access and execute workflows, without scouring the entire platform.
