Plans are now underway for a state-of-the art subsea fiber-optic cable system that will provide connectivity across the Caribbean islands and to the Americas.
Recently the system’s owner and operator, Deep Blue Cable, announced that the company reached an agreement with TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity Ltd company. TE SubCom will play an instrumental role in the project by building and deploying the Deep Blue subsea cable system.
The pan-Caribbean system spans nearly 12,000 km and features landing points in 12 markets across the region including the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic, Curaçao, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and the Turks & Caicos Islands. The system also features dual diverse landings in the U.S., which will include the first landing of a cable on the Gulf Coast of Florida.
Deep Blue’s subsea cable network, which is expected to be completed in final quarter of 2019, will offer an initial capacity of 6 Tbps per fiber pair and will ensure competitive pricing, availability and capacity resilience. The network will be of great benefit to businesses and consumers by offering higher design capacity, lower latency and lower unit costs through direct connectivity as well as improved route planning and installation techniques.
Also notable, the Deep Blue system will provide direct fiber connectivity between major traffic hubs and optical add/drop connectivity for many smaller markets across the region. By deploying TE SubCom’s renowned optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) branching unit technology, Deep Blue Cable will be able to cost-effectively supply international bandwidth across a range of Caribbean markets in a scalable manner over time.
