Aqua CommsGlobal interconnection and data center company Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX) and Aqua Comms Limited (AquaComms) have partnered on the deployment of a new transatlantic fiber optic system, AEConnect.  Equinix’s New York and London International Business Exchange (IBX®) data center campuses will serve as network access points to connect the subsea cable system.

Network operators are expanding their infrastructures to meet growing customer demand for

Equinixservices such as Ethernet and MPLS, which are in turn driven by the growth of mobile, content delivery, video streaming, tele-presence, social media, and cloud-based data traffic.  The partnership between Equinix and AquaComms enables network service providers to facilitate this expansion as well as benefit from having presence in two of the world’s largest commercial centers.  New York City and London rank among the top five metro markets for peak international Internet traffic, while the London to New York route is the second largest international Internet traffic route globally with multiple terabits of peak traffic.

Scheduled to be ready for service in December 2015, AEConnect will span more than 5,400 km to provide high-capacity connections from New York to Killala, Ireland and beyond to greater Europe, with additional branching units for future landings.  Featuring the latest technology of 130 Gbps x 100 Gbps per fiber pair, AEConnect is one of the first transatlantic subsea cables built in nearly 15 years to satisfy the bandwidth-intensive requirements of today’s global data centers, cloud-based networks and content providers.  The 100G-compliant subsea cable also boasts 52 Tbps of available capacity, coupled with an SDN-based control to serve bandwidth-intensive applications.
