Calix Announces Next Generation PON Solutions that Redefine the Gigabit Experience

As device-enabled subscribers demand more, Calix introduces multiple wavelength NG-PON2 solutions primed for next generation applications ANAHEIM, CA – June 29, 2015 – Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX), the world leader in gigabit fiber deployments, today announced new cards for its E-Series portfolio that introduce both increased systems capacity and ITU/FSAN NG-PON2 support. By adding 10 gigabit per second (10 Gbps) time and wavelength division multiplexed (TWDM) PON NG-PON2 with both fixed and tunable wavelengths, Calix is paving the way for service providers to leverage next generation fiber solutions that redefine the broadband experience. These solutions, when combined with Calix Compass software applications and GigaCenter platforms, extend far beyond gigabit “speeds and feeds” to encompass superior Wi-Fi performance and compelling cloud-based applications, and lay the foundation for a superior gigabit and multi-gigabit experience for residential and business subscribers. Service providers globally are seeing an explosion of cloud-connected devices. In North America alone, the average person is projected to have over 11 of these devices by 2019. As these devices proliferate and are used to stream and share rich multimedia content, they will place enormous pressure on the access infrastructure. By 2019, 80 percent of all internet traffic will be IP video, while global cloud traffic will nearly quadruple over the same period. (Statistics from Cisco VNI and Cisco GCI.) Service providers need solutions that can meet these emerging demands today while seamlessly adding new technologies for even higher scale and capacity in the future. Extending...

Event Spotlight: Global Capacity’s Damon Mone Talks Carrier Ethernet at the 2015 Big Telecom Event

Originally posted by: Mary Stanhope, Vice President of Marketing at Global Capacity The Carrier Ethernet market is absolutely booming, with adoption soaring among both operators and enterprises. Research from Infonetics, for example, shows that telecom operators plan to spend $150 billion on Carrier Ethernet equipment between 2014 and 2018. Meanwhile, the competitive advantages of CE for business range from lower costs to easier implementation to more flexible bandwidth. I got the chance to sit down with our very own Director of Product Engineering, Damon Mone, shortly after he returned from this year’s Big Telecom Event (BTE) where he took the stage for the workshop titled, “Carrier Ethernet in the Cloud Age.” Damon shared some of his top takeaways and key messages from the event with me. “I enjoyed this workshop tremendously. The reason why I’m so excited about the topic of Carrier Ethernet is because there’s a huge demand for cloud-based enterprise services—data center, applications—but the access or connection to them is still frequently Internet-based, leading to challenges.  Challenges that Carrier Ethernet can solve,” shared Damon. “This workshop session served as a platform for myself and the attendees to discuss how are we, as an industry, better positioning Ethernet in order to eliminate the concerns of not only connecting to the cloud but supporting those types of cloud services with unique Ethernet service attributes?” During his presentation Damon addressed topics including the evolving cloud ecosystem, today’s top cloud...

AdaptiveMobile Expands to Become Ireland’s #2 Telecom Software Company

DUBLIN & DALLAS — June 25, 2015 — AdaptiveMobile (http://www.adaptivemobile.com) has expanded to protect one fifth of the world’s mobile subscribers and is now Ireland’s 2nd largest telecoms software company. Global expansion in both its customer base and employees has seen AdaptiveMobile grow to now protect over 1.3 billion subscribers across more than 75 mobile operators worldwide. This growth has been driven by AdaptiveMobile’s continued leading edge work in identifying, mitigating and protecting against the latest mobile security threats. The first to discover recent Android malware threats including Selfmite and Gazon, AdaptiveMobile launched its SS7 Protection Product and Grey Route Controls Service earlier this year – providing communication service providers with state of the art protection to secure their networks and protect and grow new revenue streams.  Just last month, AdaptiveMobile blocked Apple’s iPhone message crash for millions of subscribers, protecting them from a new form of SMS messaging attack that immediately crashes your iPhone, iPad or iPod upon opening the message. The depth of expertise within AdaptiveMobile continues to be recognised by the industry; the Company has recently been identified by Gartner as a ‘Cool Vendor’ in their “Cool Vendors in Communications Service Provider, Security, 2015” Report. At this year’s RSA Conference, AdaptiveMobile’s researchers revealed how they have been tracking and blocking criminal activity around messaging bank fraud alerts and shared unique intelligence on previously unseen mobile attacks impacting financial institutions within the United States.  During Mobile World Congress...

IP Transit Providers & Carriers Align for Enhanced Service, Increased Business & Geographic Reach

As originally written and published on LinkedIn Pulse The well-worn and ancient proverb, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend,” suggests that two opposing parties should work together against a common enemy. Where facilities-based carriers and global ISP Hurricane Electric are concerned, however, the formulation might look like this: the friend of my friend is my friend too. Consider this… Facilities-based carriers regularly expend tens to hundreds of millions of dollars to build physical fiber plants in order to sell circuits to their network and Internet customers in limited regions of the world. Meanwhile, Hurricane Electric builds a global Internet backbone using circuits from carriers so it can sell wholesale IP Transit to these same networks and Internet companies, all of which require circuits from the local carrier to get to the buildings where Hurricane Electric’s routers are located. Some facilities-based carriers default to not selling higher-end services, such as Hurricane Electric’s high-speed IP transit connection, to customers due to the ill-conceived notion that they are their direct competition. The reality, however, could not be further from the truth. Selling layer 2 transport is extremely lucrative for facilities-based carriers everywhere because the revenue per deal is higher than selling the same amount of Internet access. In fact, facilities-based carriers stand to make significant profit by selling metro Ethernet and local loops to their customers in order to link to Hurricane Electric’s core routers...
