An Unlikely Discussion at MWC

Ladies and gentleman, I give you Mobile World Congress. (“And I like it!” as Mick Jagger says) It’s been predicted by our friends Ed Gubbins, Peter Jarich and Joe Madden (among others) that a certain number (5) and a letter (G) will dominate conversations at this year’s congress. (Cue Ted Nugent: “5G fever, duh, duh, duh…”) While we understand the allure of the promise of fiber-like wireless speeds, the topic we’re keen for is network densification. Unfortunately, the discussion won’t likely progress beyond the current mantra of, “It’s gonna to be a toolkit approach.” The Densification Challenge Iain Gillott from iGR identifies in a paper sponsored by SOLiD that “Mobile bandwidth demand is rapidly increasing around the world. In North America, iGR expects that by 2017 the consumption of mobile data per month will increase more than six times over its level in 2012. But, the deeper issue gets lost in this statistic. 2014 U.S. Carrier Ethernet LEADERBOARD

As originally published in Vertical Systems Group Shakeup in rankings; Ports grew 23% in 2014 BOSTON, MA, FEBRUARY 19, 2015 –  Vertical Systems Group’s U.S. Carrier Ethernet LEADERBOARD results for year-end 2014 are as follows (in rank order based on retail port share): AT&T, Level 3, Verizon, CenturyLink, Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Cox and XO. Continued solid market demand for higher bandwidth services boosted the U.S. base of Ethernet port installations 23% in 2014. This growth rate is on track with Vertical’s previous forecast and follows a 26% increase in 2013. Port shares were calculated using the base of enterprise installations of Ethernet services, plus input from surveys of Ethernet providers. The LEADERBOARD threshold is four percent (4%) or more of billable port installations.
